It protects your professional judgment, your boundaries, and the quality of the work you bring into the world.

This article is for beginners and for nurses who’ve been using AI for a while but still feel like the output is hit-or-miss. The goal is simple: help you use AI in a way that makes your thinking clearer, sharpens your next steps, and makes business decisions easier to carry out—without outsourcing your authority.

A real problem AI can help you solve: friction in your thinking

If business feels harder than it “should,” it’s often not because you’re bad at business.

More often, you’re trying to make decisions while carrying invisible friction:

Assumptions you haven’t named yet

Competing goals (what you want vs what you think you “should” want)

Unclear definitions (what “offer” means at your stage)

Muddy language (that makes choices feel bigger than they are)

Outdated stories about what’s realistic for you now

If you don’t reduce that friction, you can work hard and still feel stuck—because your thinking is doing extra work before you ever take action.

A professional way to use AI is to treat it like a steady, reflective collaborator: bring your actual context, set real boundaries, and ask it to help you clarify what you mean, what you’re assuming, and how to make clear decisions that serve you.

First principle: AI is a tool, not a strategy

One line is worth keeping in front of you:

AI is a tool, not a strategy.

Your strategy comes from your judgment about what matters most in your business: who you serve, what you’re offering, what you’ll do next, and what you’ll stop (or pause) doing.

AI can support that strategy by helping you:

Clarify what you mean (so your words match your intent)

Identify assumptions you’re carrying without noticing

Generate options so you can choose more intentionally

Outline a plan so you can execute with less rework

What AI cannot do is replace the human work of discernment, e.g., what fits your values, what fits your boundaries, and what you’re willing and able to test.

Once you treat AI as a tool (not an authority), the next step is to set it up to collaborate with you the same way a good coach or teammate would.

Framework: Reflective Collaborator Method

The Reflective Collaborator Method is a simple way to set up AI so it supports your thinking instead of replacing your judgment.

Use this method when you notice any of these symptoms:

You feel stuck, unclear, or like you’re circling the same decision

You’re tempted to overbuild (more content, more steps, more structure) before the basics are clear

You’re carrying competing priorities and can’t tell what matters most

You want to test an idea, but you’re not sure how to do it or what “evidence” to count

The point is not to get AI to “solve your problem.” The point is to use it as a reflective collaborator to help you clarify your decision, surface your assumptions, and identify a next step you can test.

To give you something that’s actually usable in this short article, I’ll focus on one core move:

Teach AI how to work with you as a reflective collaborator (aka set the collaboration container)

That one move is enough to change the quality of what you get back, and it sets you up to use AI for multiple purposes going forward, without getting lost in a complicated system.

Step 1: Set the collaboration container

Most people use AI like a vending machine, expecting:

prompt in → text out

That tends to produce either generic answers or answers that sound confident but don’t match your real situation.

A more professional approach is to do what you’d do with any collaborator: communicate a clear intention and your values and boundaries that go with it.

You’re going to tell the AI:

Who you serve (in plain language)

What you’re trying to accomplish in the next X days (your time frame)

What your values are (so it doesn’t push you into a tone or tactic that feels wrong)

What your boundaries are (so you don’t drift into territory that’s unsafe for your license)

How you want it to behave (as a reflective collaborator, not an authority)

Two key guardrails to make explicit

Guardrail A: Don’t ask AI for scope or ethical rulings.

Avoid questions like:

“Is this within my scope?”

“Is this ethical?”

“Tell me what I’m allowed to do.”

Instead, use AI to generate considerations and questions you will evaluate using your professional standards and your own judgment. Examples:

“List the considerations I should evaluate before I decide.”

“Draft questions I should bring to my mentor and/or licensing resources.”

“Help me compare options against the boundaries I listed above.”

Guardrail B: Don’t use AI output as evidence about your audience.

AI can help you organize your thinking and help you design a test. It cannot tell you what your audience wants. Audience evidence comes from observations, such as conversations, responses, sign-ups, replies, payments, and patterns you’ve documented.

If the AI starts acting like the expert, reset it

If you notice the tone drifting into certainty, advice-giving, or “here’s what you should do,” pause and reset the collaboration. You can do that in a few lines:

Restate the decision you’re making in one sentence

Ask for assumptions and tradeoffs, not advice

Ask for 1–3 clarifying questions before it offers options

This keeps the professional authority with you and keeps the AI’s work reflective rather than directive.

How you can use your reflective collaborator (two practical use-cases)

Use-case 1: Improve your offer’s clarity

If your offer isn’t working, don’t assume you need a new offer. You might just need clearer language.

A simple offer clarity structure is:

Who you help (person)

What they struggle with (problem)

What they want instead (desired change)

The step you’re inviting them to take (specific, schedulable, and realistic)

Here’s a quick “before → after” example of this structure:

Before: “I help people feel better naturally.”

After: “I help busy adults reduce everyday stress so they can feel more steady and energized. We start with a 20-minute clarity call to identify your best step.”

How to use your AI reflective collaborator to improve your offer’s clarity:

Paste your current offer sentence(s) into your AI assistant

Ask what is clear vs vague in the sentence, and what assumptions it contains

Ask for 2–3 variations that preserve your meaning while making your language more precise

Choose the version that best matches your audience and your intent and boundaries

Ask for help to design one small test you can run this week to see if real people respond

What to avoid:

Letting AI pick your niche or strategy for you

Accepting polished wording that you wouldn’t actually say

Skipping the test and treating the AI output as proof

Make “real evidence” tangible (especially important at early stages)

When you use AI to explore offer language, the next step is not “believe the output.” The next step is validate audience interest with something observable.

Here are three examples of actual evidence you can collect quickly:

People reply to your message or post with a specific “yes” or a comment (not just likes)

People take the next step you invited (such as sign up, request a call, or attend)

You offer a small next step, and someone pays (even one person is a signal worth studying)

You can collaborate with your AI reflective collaborator to identify what to test and how to test it by sharing your constraints and preferences—what options fit you and what options don’t.

Your reflective collaborator can help you outline 2–3 test choices, name the tradeoffs, and clarify what “success evidence” would look like for each choice.

Use-case 2: Time and energy planning (what to do and stop doing)

Many nurse entrepreneurs don’t need more tactics. They need fewer obligations and more focus.

This is one of the most practical uses of a reflective collaborator, because it supports follow-through: fewer choices, less rework, more completion.

Useful areas to focus your inquiry on:

Effort without learning or momentum

Actions you’re doing out of habit, fear, or “should,” not strategy

The smallest set of actions that would make the next 30 days meaningful

What to reduce, delegate, or delete

How to use your reflective collaborator for time and energy planning:

List your current weekly actions (even if they’re messy)

Ask it to sort them into: high leverage / low leverage / uncertain

High leverage (creates progress or learning)

Low leverage (creates effort without progress)

Uncertain (needs a short test)

Share your constraints (time limits, energy patterns, responsibilities)

Ask it to propose 2–3 “stop doing” candidates and name the tradeoff of each

Decide what to stop—and what evidence you’ll use to confirm the stop was wise

10-minute exercise: set up your AI reflective collaborator

If you’ve ever thought, “AI isn’t working for me,” it’s often because the tool doesn’t know your context and you haven’t told it how to behave.

This short exercise fixes that by giving your AI assistant a clear working container. You’ll create a setup you can reuse anytime you feel stuck, uncertain, or about to overbuild.

Minutes 1–3: Create your context message

Open your AI tool (ChatGPT or another AI assistant).

Start a new thread.

Copy the bullets below into the message box.

Fill in the bracketed parts with your information.

Paste the completed version as your first message in the new thread.

I’m a nurse entrepreneur building a business

I help [people] who struggle with [problem] so they can [what they want instead]

My 90-day business goal is [one sentence]

My values in business are [3–5 values]

Examples (choose what fits you): calm professionalism, honesty, client dignity, simplicity, sustainability, scope-safety, evidence-informed decisions, respect for autonomy, quality over volume

My ethical boundaries include

Privacy: [what you will and won’t share]

Scope: [what you can and can’t do as a licensed nurse]

Tone: [how you want your communication to feel]

Minutes 4–7: Add your collaboration rules

In the same post, copy and paste the following instructions for the AI:

“Act as my reflective collaborator, not an authority.

Ask me 1–3 clarifying questions before you produce an output

Reflect back what you think I mean in plain language and ask if it’s accurate

Name assumptions you hear me making

When I’m choosing between options, give me 2–3 options and name the tradeoffs

Do not hype, overly reassure me, or make claims about results

Do not treat your output as evidence about my audience

Do not give nursing scope or ethical rulings;

Daniel Priestly is an award-winning entrepreneur, author, and founder of the entrepreneur accelerator Dent Global. He’s helped more than 5,000 entrepreneurs build successful companies in over 50 industries. These notes are from an interview with Steven Bartlett, a British entrepreneur, investor, and founder of the Diary of a CEO podcast. When I saw the video just six weeks after its launch, it had already had 2.4 million views! Click here to watch the full interview.

Daniel’s Process for Scaling a Business in One Year

Using logic, emotion, and urgency, make a 1:1 offer (e.g., private coaching or consulting: your most expensive service) that’s so powerful it fills and has a waiting list (aka “oversubscribed”).

Call the first round of 10-15 people a beta program or pilot test.

Expect to talk with 20 people to get one paying client and 200 people to get 10 clients.

Launch the offer in a different place every week until you’re full and have a waiting list.

Make a group offer so powerful that it becomes full with a waiting list. (e.g., group course)

Make a subscription offer so powerful that it becomes full with a waiting list. (e.g., community)

Invite people in these groups to move into the higher-priced group above theirs.

Daniel’s 5 Ps for the Successful Business Founder’s Role

Daniel recommends the following path for business founders to follow for business success. The Ps are steps listed in the order in which they should be taken.

Pitch your ideas and offers in a way that excites people and shows how you’re different from your niche mates... and expect to do it thousands of times!

Pitching is the ability to communicate your message in a way that engages and influences people to adopt your ideas. It is a vitally important strength for any leader or entrepreneur. If you have something of great value to offer but no one can understand it, you’re stuck. Throughout history, every great business, movement, or cause began with a powerful pitch.

Powerful pitching results in other people understanding you and getting excited. For that to happen, you need to understand how much value you have to offer. You need to understand the problems you solve and how they impact people better than anyone. Great pitching isn’t about having the right words; it’s about understanding and expressing your core value clearly.

Use this formula: If you think it’s about ____________________________________________, you’ve missed the point. It’s really about ___________________________________________.

Example: If you think it’s about DAYCARE, you’ve missed the point. It’s really about getting your child school-ready.

Publish thought leadercontent about your audience’s problem, your viewpoint about the cause, and how they can get through it. Use videos, blogs, email, books and audiobooks, podcasts, web pages, etc. (Refer to the 7-11-4 formula I described earlier.)

When you write, you create valuable “intellectual property” that can be used to spread a message, train your team, add value to your clients, or advance a line of thought.

Publishing your ideas in reports, blogs, articles, and books communicates important and necessary messages about you. It shows you have insights into your subject matter that are worth documenting.

Publishing communicates credibility; without credibility, you can’t achieve your vision. Conversely, a person with high credibility doesn’t need to say much, but what they do say carries a lot of weight. Being an author or a published writer in your industry massively increases your credibility.

Productize your ideas and skills. It’s hard to make a living today through in-person services alone. It’s okay to start that way, but it is also okay to generate significant income. You need to productize your service as soon as possible so you can reach more people in less time. Initially, use the Demo and Customer Needs Analysis approach I described above, then productize a follow-up offer that serves the same niche audience. Once those two offers can run without much time and attention from you, use your energy to increase visibility and demand for your product instead of delivering services yourself. There are two main types of products you need to develop:

High-Volume Products These products allow you to become known, liked, and trusted. They could be information products like ebooks, CD sets, DVDs, downloads, or physical goods that can be sold anywhere. This type of product is designed so that many new people can get an experience of you or your business. Create product package value consistently without requiring your personal involvement. When you can do that, you’ll have taken an important step toward becoming a Key Person of Influence.

High-Value Products These products must be “a full and remarkable solution, for a real problem, offered to a market who have the money to pay.” That may sound like a mouthful, but your high-value products must tick many boxes. You might not sell many of these products, but everyone wins when you do. PS: You don’t have to supply all the expertise. You can hire other people with skills that add value to your products.

Profile yourself and your cause by elevating your ideas “above the noise” and gaining visibility as a thought leader and person of influence. Use multiple media channels, speak from stages, win awards, etc., to increase your visibility and credibility.

A person with a strong online presence will clinch deals, whereas someone with a poor or no profile may raise questions for the other parties involved.

If you lack a recognizable profile, you must chase the customers, investors, and suppliers you need. It is much better to have a recognizable profile in your industry and attract opportunities. Then, you can curate the opportunities that arrive.

Fortunately, the digital world has made building a global profile within your niche cheaper and easier than ever, provided you follow a strategic approach.

Partnerships are strategic alliances with other people who can make things happen faster. Partnerships will stabilize and leverage your business. Successful people are well-connected. They focus on their strengths and form strategic partnerships with others who complement them. For example, Richard Branson has 150 companies inside the Virgin Group, mostly joint ventures and partnerships.

Partnerships can include joint ventures to increase reach and sales, capital partnerships to bring in investments, distribution partnerships to broaden or simplify your product distribution, and product partnerships to include more people’s expertise in your products.

Often, struggling people try to do everything themselves. They make the sales, deliver the work, manage the accounts, update their websites, and then wonder why they feel run down. Their illogical idea is to engage with partners and teammates after they become successful.

They are constantly seeking new people and organizations to help advance their vision. As soon as possible, they establish a core team, partner with investors for capital, partner with distributors, and form alliances with other well-known brands.

Many small business owners, leaders and managers are weighed down by an apparent lack of resources. Through the power of effective partnerships, you can access any resource on the planet.

A Key Person of Influence knows they don’t need to own everything or possess every skill set, but they do need to access the people who do.

By leveraging the skills, talents and resources of others, a Key Person of Influence is able to become highly valued through the connections they have.

Types of Partners

Affiliate Partners: These people are paid a commission to recommend or refer to your products and services. There are affiliate partner networks online where you can find potential affiliates for your product or service.

Brand Partners: These people or organizations make you look good. It could be celebrity endorsements, industry marquees, or prestigious institutions.

Operational Partners: These people or organizations assist you in delivering a better service to more people. These partners can help you perform the work you could not do alone.

Product Partners are organizations or individuals who supply additional products that add value to your business. They increase your capacity to deliver value and solve problems for your clients. Financial partners provide the financial resources you need to scale your enterprise. They have capital and are looking for exciting and safe places to earn a return.

Financial Partners: These people or organizations provide the financial resources you need to scale your enterprise. They have capital and are looking for exciting and safe places to get a return.

Where to Start

If you haven’t already read it, I recommend Daniel Priestley’s book “Entrepreneur Revolution.” It’s available in bookstores and on Audible. Click here to read my notes from Chapter 5: 10 Transformational Tasks That Are Essential for Your Success.

Begin by identifying your most valuable skills and the specific problems you can solve for your target audience.

Focus on developing a high-value, 1:1 offer (such as private coaching or consulting) that is so compelling that it creates a waiting list.

Use this initial offer as a beta program to refine your approach and gather feedback.

While working on this, start creating content that showcases your expertise and unique viewpoint. This can include blog posts, videos, or social media updates.

As you gain traction, productize your services into group offers and subscription models.

Simultaneously, start building your profile and seeking strategic partnerships to amplify your reach and resources.

Remember, the key is to transition from selling your time to creating intellectual property and scalable products that can eventually be sold as financial assets.

The Next Frontier

Within the next 10 to 15 years, every industry will have changed how it works by employing many AI applications and agents that crunch data to innovate effective solutions to problems. The best way to leverage this moment in time is to take three steps in the following order:

Move away from selling your time for money, which grows incrementally and barely keeps up with inflation, and into creating new thought leadership, intellectual property, and media.

You can do this by reflecting on your and others' experiences and identifying more effective ways to solve meaningful problems.

Then, communicate this through guides, images, videos, and other media.

Collect and organize data and create software that helps people get their desired results.

Package all that into a business that can be sold as a financial asset.

Conclusion

Daniel Priestly's insights offer a valuable roadmap for nurses and other healing arts professionals considering entrepreneurship. By building relationships, providing consistent value, and strategically targeting their ideal audience, nurses can leverage their expertise to create businesses that offer financial rewards, freedom, and fulfillment.

This framework, combined with an understanding of buyer behavior and the power of digital platforms, equips aspiring nurse entrepreneurs to thrive in today's evolving marketplace. Building thought leadership and creating intellectual property and software that helps people solve meaningful problems will be crucial as we look toward a future increasingly influenced by AI.

References

1 Salesforce (2022) ‘What are customer expectations, and how have they changed?’, www.salesforce.com/resources/articles/customer-expectations, accessed 31 May 2022.

When clients seek our services, they trust us with their well-being.

To build a thriving business, we must address the inherent risks clients perceive when choosing a service. This article will explore three core strategies to effectively reduce these perceptions of risk.

Before diving into the strategies, let's briefly recap the three essential roles of marketing:

The Three Roles of Marketing

There are three roles of marketing.

To get your audience’s attention

To establish if your offer is a good fit by using the three filters of relevance, credibility, and value

To lower the risk of taking the next step

You might be surprised, but even if someone decides that you are exactly what they are looking for (relevance), that they trust you (credibility), and that your offer is a really good deal for the money (value), they might still not buy.

How could this be?

It’s probably because of a cold, stone wall of risk between you and them.

They are standing on one side of the wall with money and a desire to work with you. However, the wall is too high to get through or over easily.

So, how do we lower, eliminate, or even reverse that wall so it’s a gentle downhill slope toward us? How do we make it easier for people to say ‘yes’?

Core Strategy #1: Develop a Strong Reputation (aka Word-of-Mouth Marketing)

Even in our world of constant digital marketing, word-of-mouth marketing is still the most effective marketing method. A solid reputation built on high-quality care and positive experiences is the most effective way to reduce risk perception because clients often seek guidance from others' experiences.

Here are some ways to cultivate a strong reputation:

Endorsements: Seek endorsements from respected figures in the healthcare community, such as physicians, specialists, or other nurse leaders.

Good Ratings and Reviews: Encourage clients to leave reviews on platforms like Yelp or Google Reviews.

Public Relations (PR): Secure positive media coverage, such as articles featuring your services or client testimonials.

Networking: Attend healthcare conferences, association meetings, and seminars to connect with potential clients and colleagues.

Hosting Events: Organize events, e.g., workshops, health fairs, or community screenings, to showcase your expertise.

Credentials and Expertise: Highlight your years of training, specialized certifications, number of clients served, and the size of your team.

Positioning Yourself as an Expert:

Write a book or contribute to professional journals.

Lead seminars or workshops on relevant health topics.

Showcasing Past Results:

Develop case studies demonstrating successful client outcomes.

Share photos or examples of past work.

Testimonials: Collect and share testimonials from satisfied clients. Include:

Full name

Credentials

Location

Contact information (with permission)

Before/After experiences

Stories of challenges overcome

What makes you unique

Biggest client benefit

Comparison to competitors

The Power of Word-of-Mouth (Silverman's Insights)

George Silverman's work on word-of-mouth marketing emphasizes its importance, especially for high-stakes services like healthcare. Clients rely on others' experiences to mitigate risk when direct experience is impractical or too risky. Key takeaways from Silverman:

Direct experience can be risky, time-consuming, and anxiety-producing.

Indirect experience (hearing about others' experiences) can be more valuable than direct experience.

People are more likely to trust recommendations from peers, experts, and independent rating services.

Core Strategy #2: Taking Risk On Yourself

To further reduce risk perception, consider taking some risks yourself. This will show clients your confidence in your services.

Flexible Payment Options: Offer payment plans or initial consultations at a reduced rate.

Trial Periods: Provide a trial period or introductory session at no cost.

Value-Added Offers: Include extra services or products as a bonus.

Free Initial Services: Offer a free foot massage at a health fair or a free blood pressure screening at a community event.

Results-Based Payment: Offer a payment structure where you are paid based on the results achieved for your clients. This shows that you are confident in your services.

Loss Leaders: Offer an initial service or product at a very low cost or for free to attract new clients.

Offering Strong Guarantees

Strong guarantees can significantly reduce perceived risk. Taking on the risk demonstrates confidence in your services and commitment to client satisfaction.

Insights from Experts

Jay Abraham: Emphasize no-risk guarantees and provide a long enough timeframe for clients to feel secure.

Clayton Makepeace: The stronger the guarantee, the better. The more clients understand your approach and expertise, the more confident they will be in their decisions.

Provide Evidence: Back up your claims with articles, press stories, data, charts, graphs, and client lists.

Share Your Credentials: Highlight certifications, awards, and professional affiliations.

Offer Product Demos: Let clients see and experience your products or services firsthand.

Educate on Your Point of View: Explain your unique approach and why it benefits clients. Share your expertise through workshops, webinars, and blog posts.

But education is not just about ‘facts.’ It’s also about context. You need to also…

Educate Clients on Your Point of View

The bigger your claims, the less likely people will believe you. The bigger your claims, the more proof you’ll need to back them up. If you make a really good offer, people will be skeptical and ask themselves, “Why should I believe you?”

So, walk clients through your process and explain why your approach is unique and beneficial. This builds confidence and trust. Don't just tell them what you do; tell them why you do it that way.

Answer the question, “What do people need to see or hear to know they are making the best buying decision possible?”

Let's delve deeper into the scenario of the nurse entrepreneur who positioned her services at a premium price point. While her competitors offered similar services at a lower rate, her unique selling proposition was the comprehensive care she provided. This led to fewer complications, reduced medication expenses, and highly personalized attention to each client's needs, translating to substantial long-term cost savings. However, the initial sticker shock of the higher price tag proved to be a significant barrier.

To address this challenge, the nurse entrepreneur adopted a multi-pronged strategy. She recognized the power of social proof and enlisted the help of her satisfied clientele. Having experienced the tangible benefits of her services, these clients became her brand advocates. Their testimonials and success stories were compelling evidence of her value.

Furthermore, she gave potential clients the tools they needed to see the value in her services. She developed a comprehensive presentation template highlighting her approach's long-term cost-effectiveness. This template included data on reduced complications, lower medication costs, and other quantifiable benefits. Additionally, she created sample budget spreadsheets that potential clients could customize to demonstrate the financial advantages of choosing her services over the competition.

By providing social proof and tangible resources, the nurse entrepreneur empowered potential clients to make a strong case for her services to their insurance companies and employers. This approach addressed the initial hesitation surrounding the higher price and underscored the long-term value and cost-effectiveness of her unique approach to care.

This case study highlights the importance of effectively communicating the value proposition of premium services in healthcare. While initial costs may be higher, we can focus on the long-term benefits and cost savings. By leveraging social proof and providing tangible resources, nurse entrepreneurs can respectfully respond to price objections and enroll clients who value quality and comprehensive care.

Conclusion

Trust and credibility are the cornerstones of nursing. By prioritizing these values, you can create lasting relationships with your clients and make a positive impact on their lives. Nurse entrepreneurs can effectively reduce risk perception and build thriving businesses by implementing these three core strategies: building a strong reputation, taking on risk, and educating their clients.

Without that guidance, you can still survive, but your business growth and development will be much slower and more painful.

As nurses, we are naturally in the human relations business, so one of the best marketing paths for us is what some people call “Conversational Marketing.” This means talking to your audience through marketing, just like in person. It applies to social media posts, paid ads, website content, email content, videos, networking, and all the rest.

Networking

Let’s start with networking because, for most of us, this is where we’ll get the best return on our efforts. For networking, we are going to events to connect with other people in our area of interest or who are “hubs” of people in our audience. How can we do this most effectively?

Secret #1: Go with a friend or colleague. A friend can talk you up in a way that you cannot talk about yourself, and you can rave about your friend in ways they cannot. If you go with each other, you can promote each other, which is a fun way to do it.

Secret #2: Network for Hubs. I learned this secret from Bill Baren, a brilliant mentor to many people who are now business mentors. He said, “Don’t go networking for clients. Go networking for hubs.”

When you think about events, it’s better to go where there are people who are hubs of connections to lots of your clients and build connections with those hubs. Learning to do it well is like parachuting to the top of a mountain instead of climbing it rock by rock.

My best tip for starting this approach is to introduce yourself without needing to get anything from the hub person. Have a little bit of face time and a friendly personal connection. This does a ton in terms of the follow-up later.

Follow the model set by people like Phoenix Rudner, a realtor who focused on pet owners. Instead of thinking about where pet owners hang out, he could ask, “Where do all the hubs of pet owners hang out? Where do all these hubs get together in one place, where I could just go to one event and meet many folks?” This approach will dramatically leverage your time and energy.

Secret #3: Get their card. Do not just give your card to them, but get theirs, too. I often see people making mistakes with this. They go to networking events and run around giving out their business cards. It looks like they are accomplishing something, but most people will get home and have no idea who gave them the cards they got that night. Then, they will throw away the cards because they cannot remember who the cards are from.

I recommend waiting to make a business card until you are already making money. If you do not have a card, when people ask you for one, you can say, “No, do you have one?” and then receive their card.

This approach allows you to note something appropriate to send them, such as a blog post, a video, etc.- something useful that would start the relationship by being thoughtful and generous.

So, applying this to networking events, I would get their cards and leave with eight to ten cards. Leaving with ten hub cards you can follow up with is much more powerful than giving out 50 to 100 business cards!

Another approach is 1:1 networking. Have lunch or coffee with people you already know. Just make your intention clear by saying something like, “I’d love to catch up with you and share what I’ve decided to do with my business,” or “I could really use some advice about such-and-such,” or “I want to do some marketing, and I want to talk to you about introducing me to your such-and-such.”

Yes, sometimes, if I am going to meet with somebody, I will say, “Hey, we should go for coffee. It seems there might be a few ways we could support each other. I’m not sure how yet, but how about we grab a quick 30-minute coffee and explore that?”

Then, you can have a more personal conversation, which is much better for growing your business.

When you attend an event with many people, see if you can meet a significant hub or connection. Then, set up a one-on-one meeting after the event.

Secret #4: Have a business card that works for you. When you are ready for a business card, two things are vital.

Have a current, awesome personal photo on it. People get so many cards, and they usually won’t remember who it is from, but if there is a photo of you, they can say, “Oh, yes, it is that person.” It helps more than you might think.

Use the back of your card to give them a “pink spoon,” like the free taste in an ice cream store. Invite them to your website, where they can opt-in for a gift and get acquainted with you at their own pace. Keep the URL simple, like (yourdomain).com/free.

Ideally, the gift is online: an audio, video, PDF, quiz, or email series, and it will help the person check you out from a distance without having to book anything. Make it no risk for them and no effort for you.

Can the pink spoon be a small discount on your service? It can, but that is less pink-spoonish.

If you want to learn more about this approach, I recommend a brilliant piece by Seth Godin on being a Generosity-Based Business and the importance of Pink Spoons. You can Google it.

While you are at it, notice that free is not always generous. Sometimes, “free” can be an ultimately selfish move. A generous gift comes with no transaction anticipated, changes your approach to the market, changes your relationship with the recipient, and can even change you.

Social Media Marketing

It’s easy to find advice about social media marketing. Just be sure to look closely at the details about what is involved to get a good return on your investment of time, energy, and money.

I have little to say about social media marketing because I have not found a method that works for me. My general advice is to choose ONE media channel (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Twitter, TikTok, or whatever), consistently post content your audience values, and do not spend money on ads until you have grown a strong following that engages with your content.

It’s crucial to know what you're doing when you start spending money on social media ads. Otherwise, you'll likely receive a poor return on your investment.

I have consistently posted content and ads for another company that was paying me to do its marketing. However, I have not had enough success to say it was worth my time and energy. Other paths, like the ones I wrote about above, have been far more fruitful. This may be because I do not like social media much. So, if it works for you, that’s great.

One exception is that I did a few Facebook Lives last year, and there was much more engagement with them than I expected.

I post videos on YouTube when I have something to say. I enjoy watching YouTube videos, and I have gained a lot from them, so I am happy to add to that pool.

Email Marketing Tips

Do you receive way more emails than you read? Everyone does. However, that does not mean we don’t read any emails. We read them when we think there might be something worth our attention.

I encourage you to email the people on your list when you have something to say that will benefit your audience. While some marketing mentors teach you to send emails as often as daily or multiple times a day during a product launch, I find that annoying. No one has that much to say that is worth that much of my time, not even my family members.

In my opinion, quality is more important than quantity when it comes to emails. Here are a few other tips.

First and foremost, email marketing is a conversation. Email is uniquely 1:1. Even if you send the same message to 1000 people, always remember you are writing to another human being. If you ask questions and your readers answer, acknowledge those readers and continue the conversations.

Email’s biggest advantage is that you can automate it. You can personalize your messages, deliver them at scale, track your audience’s actions, use automated workflows, and generate data that will help you better understand your customer’s problems and preferences. You can then build your marketing strategy around those relationships. Several systems can do this for you. I have used MailChimp, AWeber, Constant Contact, Infusionsoft/Keap, MailerLite, and Systeme.io. I recommend Systeme because it is easy, includes everything you need to create and send emails to your audience, set up automated follow-up email sequences, create a website, create courses, manage affiliates, track data... and they offer free and low-cost versions for small start-up businesses! Click here to learn more.

Post-sale marketing. Building a relationship with your audience is a process; a sale is not the end of communicating with your customers. It’s important to continue the conversation with your customers after the sale and give them the tools to spread the love about your business. If your customers love your product or service, they'll come back and/or might recommend it to their friends.

Sponsored emails. If you enjoy writing and can provide content that is valuable to your audience, it has the potential to become a stand-alone business. For example, if your newsletter has a large and loyal audience, you can look into sponsorship opportunities or other ways to monetize your email content. Another approach is to provide exclusive content to the subscribers that support you financially. If that interests you, check out 88 Cups of Tea, an online platform and podcast for creative writers that offers special content for those who support them on the crowdfunding platform Patreon.

Conclusion

The purpose of marketing is to create awareness of your services, nurture a relationship with your audience, and provide a user-friendly pathway through which people can buy the value you provide.

Approaching marketing with generosity and a focus on genuine connection will yield the most fruitful results. While various strategies, such as social media and email marketing, can be effective, it’s crucial to tailor your approach to your strengths, audience, and business goals.

Nurse entrepreneurs can effectively grow their businesses by focusing on conversational marketing, building strong networks, and prioritizing quality interactions.

Connecting our fees to our “worth” is an unhealthy comparison.

The truth is: You are worth infinity. You are a precious human whose odds of being born are 1 in 400 trillion!

“Charge what you’re worth” was perhaps started by some high-priced coach who needed to justify how much they charge people.

So, let’s stop using the word “worth” when referring to our service fees.

“Charge What the Market Will Bear”

This concept says that we are supposed to charge the maximum amount our clients will tolerate.

Now, let’s flip this around and apply The Golden Rule — How would you feel if I charged you the greatest amount you could bear?

Many high-priced coaches and training programs charge as much as possible to maximize revenue and profit.

They say, “If the customer pays more, they’ll take it more seriously and get more results.”

While there is truth in that concept, many entrepreneurs use it to justify high prices. Another truth is that many people sincerely apply themselves when they pay high prices for programs, but they still don't get the results promised.

Especially beware of expensive business education and coaching. This area is rife with enormous prices!

You might be thinking: But isn’t business supposed to work like this? Isn’t everyone out forthemselves? Don’t all sellers charge as much as possible? Shouldn’t all buyers beware?

What do you believe about this?

I don’t believe this is necessary or right, plus it is contrary to the ethics of the nursing profession.

Let’s look at a few more types of conventional business advice.

“Charge for the Value You Provide”

Again, while there is truth in that concept, it can be used exploitatively at times. For example, if you are:

A nurse coach who helps a couple avoid divorce, how valuable is that?

A nurse healer who helps a person be able to work again, how valuable is that?

Either scenario could be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, but in these cases, pricing your services based on the full value you provide would be exploitative.

“Higher Prices = Higher Quality”

Some business mentors advise, "If something costs more, people will think it is better than a cheaper version."

This is true until word of mouth spreads, and it always will.

When you charge more, people expect more. When customer expectations are higher than what you can consistently deliver, you'll underdeliver, and your customers will feel disappointed.

However, when you charge at a standard rate, people expect standard service. Then, when you deliver exceptional service, they will be delighted, and they'll happily give you testimonials and talk about you to their friends.

Here’s My Advice

Charge Based on the Market Rate

It makes sense to price based on what your clients expect and see in the marketplace. The going market rate is the audience’s vote for what a service is “valued” for.

Look at the prices charged by people who offer similar services in the service tier you want to serve and start at the baseline rate of that tier.

You probably won’t find a service exactly like yours, so look at services in the geographical and/or digital community you serve. Focus on licensed professionals with education and experience levels similar to yours. That might include counselors, therapists, physical therapists, acupuncturists, etc.

Then, consider your needs and reputation in the marketplace and price your services accordingly.

The customer’s values are also important. If your customers want premium services and you can consistently provide them, then charging more can make sense.

However, before we rush to brand ourselves as premium or luxury, we need to consider whether luxury branding authentically aligns with how we want to present ourselves. Offering luxury services and prices may feel authentic to some people.

If we describe three basic service tiers as premium, standard, and economy, what tier do you want to use to offer your services?

It might help to think of a familiar product like a car. Cadillac, Buick, and Chevrolet represent General Motors' premium, standard, and economy car tiers.

Another example of tiers is when a business offers Gold, Silver, and Bronze membership levels.

Which of these tiers do you want to position yourself and your nurse coach, consultant, or healing arts business in?

Here’s How I Charge

Everyone needs to come to their own pricing, but these are my overall guidelines.

Enoughness in Pricing

I want my brand to be known as effective and customized, imparting value to people that will serve them for years to come. That would fit a premium service, but I also want to serve as many nurses as possible, not just those who can afford to pay premium rates. How should I price my services?

Here’s where my core values come in.

When choosing my prices, one of my core values is asking myself: Do I have what I need?

My answer is yes. So, my company delivers premium services at standard rates. I charge less than my peers in the premium tier, and I’m grateful to be able to do so.

Should you always charge less than your peers?

No, it depends on two factors: Your needs and your reputation.

If you need more, it’s completely OK to charge more.

If your reputation is such that your audience feels your service is unique and cannot be compared to market rates, then, of course, you can authentically, with integrity and joy, position your service at the highest price.

You can get to that level when you continuously listen to your customers and improve your service.

Compassion in Pricing

Another core value I follow in my pricing is Compassion. We’ve all had the following two experiences:

Experience 1. We want to buy a service but see the price and feel a sticker shock. We think, “Wow, they charge a lot!” As we consider making the payment(s), we might feel stressed rather than relieved and grateful. If the buyer has shopped around, they have a sense of the market rate.

Experience 2. We love a service, and the pricing is so affordable! We think, “This is SUCH a good deal. I would be so happy to tell others about this service!” We feel relieved by their pricing… grateful… and become advocates of that business. The seller charges compassionately, and the buyer feels they want to take care of the business’s well-being by expressing gratitude. This is reciprocal compassionat work, and it can create an ongoing, widening cycle of compassion that spreads.

What could happen if all sellers aimed to give their audience the experience of “What a great deal!”?

Charge Less Until You Have a Waiting List

Consider the price range in your chosen service tier and set your prices in the middle of thatrange. Then, offer a lower introductory price for the first 10 (or another number) customers.

If people see your service as a great value for the price, they will tell others.

You'll improve your skills quickly by having many clients because you're doing the work!

Then, raise your rates over time as your skills and service demand increase.

When you have a waiting list, raise your rates. Always offer something free, like an ebook or workshop, so the audience can connect with you and benefit from your approach without committing to a large investment. There are countless nurse business ideas, and having a nursing education opens up even more possibilities. Nurses have business advantages over the general population due to our experiences, skills, work ethics, and public trust.

Nurse entrepreneurs use their professional nursing experience and education to start businesses in healthcare and other business sectors. Businesses established by nurse entrepreneurs may include developing and selling a health product or medical device or offering independent nursing services, such as health coaching, health education, home health, and many others. A nursing career path that includes entrepreneurship offers independence and autonomy and requires creativity, hard work, and strong business skills.

When nurses are successful in their own businesses, they can increase their income, satisfaction, and freedom to even higher levels than when they were employees.

Becoming a Nurse Entrepreneur

Nurse entrepreneurs work for themselves, so the skills required vary depending on the nature of their business venture. In general, the following skills and qualifications are beneficial for nurse entrepreneurs:

A valid RN license

Prior professional nursing experience in the business area of focus

Basic business skills and knowledge (e.g., accounting, marketing, and sales)

Good communication skills for interacting with customers, patients, and employees

Ability to work independently and willing to take on personal financial risk

What Are the Education Requirements for a Nurse Entrepreneur?

In general, nurse entrepreneurs have completed at least an ADN or BSN degree and attained an RN license in their state, but some business opportunities are also open to LPNs/LVNs. Business education is highly valuable and may include informal training or mentoring in business skills, taking a few courses in business, or attaining a business degree.

Are Any Certifications or Credentials Needed?

No specific certifications or credentials are required to become a nurse entrepreneur. However, depending on the nature of their business, certain certifications may be valuable.

The day-to-day responsibilities of a nurse entrepreneur depend on the specific venture but usually include activities related to running a business, such as accounting, marketing, sales, and developing a customer base.

Currently, more than half of all nurses are considering leaving their employment because of high stress, mental and emotional exhaustion, being buried in paperwork, or a lack of job satisfaction. Starting a business can help alleviate these issues and give nurses more autonomy and flexibility.

Note: If you search for nurse business education opportunities online, you will find many terms describing nurse business owners, including nursing consultants, self-employed nurses, nurse entrepreneurs, independent nurse contractors, independent registered nurses, and nurses in private or group practice. One company that provides nurse business coaching and education for all of those types is New Directions for Nurses, dba LiberatedNurse.com.

First, Check Your State’s Nurse Practice Act

Before you invest time or money into starting a nurse business, check your state’s Nurse Practice Act (NPA) to discover if what you want to do is within your legal right as a nurse. In some cases, nurses are more limited than the general public in their business activities.

The American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA) has a web page that gives nurses access to the Nurse Practice Acts in all 50 states, and they update it every year. Check your state’s NPA here: https://www.ahna.org/Home/Resources/State-Practice-Acts

If your practice does not fit within the definition and scope of practice for a nurse in your state, you may be violating the law. The definition of nursing differs from state to state, but you will usually find it near the beginning of the Act.

If you are not 100% clear that your business activity is allowed, consult a lawyer who is familiar with nurse-owned businesses. Check with the National Nurses in Business Association (NNBA) for recommendations and other valuable nurse business resources.

What Are Your Interests and Skills?

Selecting the nurse business ideas that are best for you requires evaluating your skills, goals, and interests. To narrow the field of possibilities, ask yourself if you enjoy and are good at any of these services:

Educating others about medical or health-related issues

Designing and implementing wellness programs for individuals or groups

Identifying problems and solutions in healthcare organizations

Providing companion services

Providing medical equipment and supplies

Reviewing care provided by others and creating patient safety and well-being programs

Providing a nurse’s analysis of healthcare situations to lawyers as a nurse consultant

Home Health or Home Care Agency

The home health service and home care agency models present compelling business opportunities for nurses. While both services cater to individuals needing assistance, home health focuses on medical care provided by nurses and therapists, while home care offers non-medical support through licensed care aides. This distinction is crucial for those considering starting a business in this sector.

Description: Home health and home care services are similar but different.
