The importance of the entrepreneurial nurse mindset in business

Imposter Syndrome is equivalent to self-doubt. The Oxford Dictionary defines it as “the persistent inability to believe one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved through one's own efforts or skills.”

Author Clare Josa, author of Ditching Imposter Syndrome, identifies four Ps associated with imposter syndrome: perfectionism, paralysis, people-pleasing, and procrastination.

Imposter syndrome is possibly the most common feeling that prevents nurse entrepreneurs from taking action to build successful businesses.

So, if you have an exciting idea for a business, book, podcast, or training - and feel foolish for thinking you could pull it off - you’re not alone.

If you feel afraid of what your family, peers, or colleagues will think about you for putting a new idea into action, you are definitely not alone.

But remember: There are no perfect authorities. We can deliver tremendous value to others even with our shortcomings and flaws.

Yes, 10, 100, 1000+ people may have written or spoken about your subject. But have they done so in your way? From your background? With your point of view? Delivered at the only time when people are ready to hear it? Probably not.

Recently, actress Reese Witherspoon confided that she was ready to quit the movie Walk the Line, for which she won an Oscar. Reese was required to play a musical legend - playing instruments and singing - things she couldn't do well. Seven months into rehearsals, she was crying every day.

Then, she realized that she was Reese, not June Carter Cash and that she'd have to bring her own genius and strengths to the task.

If you’ve been practicing nursing for several years and want to be a coach, consultant, poet, or inventor, your colleagues and family might think that’s an entirely different career path. They might doubt your ability to be successful or fear you’re making a huge mistake.

But you know you.

Maybe your experience, values, and vision inspire you to do something valuable that's very different from how people have seen you before.

You're allowed to try your idea and succeed!

We don't have to let imposter syndrome or other self-sabotaging fears hold us back from experiencing the fulfillment and impact we want to make.

The path through imposter syndrome is letting ourselves feel humble and turning our attention to appreciating our caring heart, being grateful for having a vision of what is possible, and being willing to take action to make things better.

From my 40 years of experience as a nurse entrepreneur, I encourage nurses to embrace their individuality, appreciate their unique strengths and viewpoints, and realize that they are uniquely prepared to serve the people who need their help.

ChatGPT, short for Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is a large language model developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT is the original AI LLM. Launched in November 2022, it became the fastest-growing app of all time, reaching 100 million monthly active users after just two months.

ChatGPT is designed to understand and generate human-like text in response to a wide range of prompts and questions. It is trained on a massive dataset of text data, allowing it to create coherent and informative responses on various topics. Although it is still under development, it has the potential to revolutionize the way we access information, automate tasks, and streamline workflows.

ChatGPT is free to use. A premium version, ChatGPT Plus, costs $20 per month.

• Natural language processing: ChatGPT understands and responds to prompts and questions in a natural and conversational way, making it easy to interact with.
• Text generation: ChatGPT can generate various text formats, including stories, poems, essays, code, and marketing copy. This can be helpful for creating content for your website, social media, or email campaigns.
• Question answering: ChatGPT can answer questions on various topics, providing you with quick and easy access to information. This can be useful for research, staying up-to-date on industry trends, or simply satisfying your curiosity.
• Translation: ChatGPT can translate text from one language to another, which can be helpful if you have patients or clients who speak different languages.
• Summarization: ChatGPT can summarize lengthy texts into shorter, more concise versions, saving you time and effort when reviewing documents or research.

Perplexity AI is an AI-powered search engine (aka "answer engine") designed to provide users with concise, accurate answers to their queries by leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs). Unlike traditional search engines that present a list of links, Perplexity delivers synthesized information in a natural language format, complete with citations and follow-up suggestions for more refined searches [2][3][4]. It prioritizes users over advertisers and transforms how users discover, access, and consume knowledge online by providing a more direct and user-friendly search experience [4].

Perplexity is free to use. Perplexity Pro ($20/month) includes features like Copilot for more refined searches, unlimited file uploads, and API access [6][7].

• Conversational Search: Perplexity uses natural language processing to interpret queries contextually, making it easier for users to find the information they need through a conversational interface [2][3].
• Content Generation: In addition to search queries, Perplexity can generate various types of content, including written text, images, and simple code, by integrating multiple LLMs and image generation models. This can help create marketing materials, educational resources, or other marketing content for your business.
• Focus Feature: This feature allows for more direct searches across various categories, including YouTube, Reddit, and academic papers [2]. This can be useful for conducting in-depth research or finding specific information on a particular topic.
• User-Centric Design: Users can organize their searches into threads and collections, making managing and revisiting their queries easier [2][3]. This can be helpful for keeping track of your research or organizing information for future reference.
• Real-Time Information: Perplexity indexes the web daily, allowing it to provide up-to-date information on recent news, game scores, and other timely topics [3].

Copilot is Microsoft’s AI LLM that launched in February 2023. Microsoft has integrated Copilot into several products, including the Edge browser, Bing Search, and the Microsoft 365 suite.

In the fall of 2024, SEO expert Neil Patel compared Google’s Gemini, Open AI’s ChatGPT, and Microsoft’s Copilot to see which AI chatbot provides the best results for various tasks. Neil’s team asked Gemini, ChatGPT, and Copilot two questions (one to measure accuracy and one to measure strategic advice) to determine the best response. Then, they measured each LLM’s response against nine criteria on a scale from 0 to 3, for a total of up to 27 points. 

Copilot was the best overall performer. It provided remarkably detailed and nuanced answers, regularly linked to relevant resources, and responded in a way that would make it easy to copy and paste the answer with minimal editing.[11]

You can use Copilot free, but there’s an additional monthly fee if you want it to integrate with Microsoft 365.

Gemini, formerly known as Bard, is Google’s AI LLM that launched in March 2023. The platform can do almost anything ChatGPT can do, including answering questions and creating images.

The model’s multimodal capabilities are impressive. It allows users to create video, audio, and code on the same platform.

Gemini is free to use. The premium version, called Gemini Advanced, costs $20 per month.

Here are some of the best ways for nurse business owners to use LLMs to enhance their marketing:

• Content ideation. The best AI tools can provide dozens of excellent blog posts and whitepaper topic ideas.
• Structuring articles. AI large language models are great tools for creating a quick blog article outline. They can help you ensure you have the right points in the right order.
• Getting feedback. Want to make sure your blog post has enough examples and you’ve tied up all the loose ends? Have an AI tool provide feedback on your draft.
• Quality assurance. These tools are also great at checking spelling, grammar, and style.

Success requires skillful use of prompts, though. Austin Cosler, Managing Editor at NP Digital, explains, “Crafting effective prompts for LLMs is an art. The key lies in keeping them concise and focused. Instead of cramming in multiple questions, ask one clear and specific question at a time. Providing well-defined context and examples (known as shots) can significantly improve a model’s understanding. Don’t forget the power of Determine Appropriate Response (DARE) prompts — these are special prompts that leverage the LLM itself to decide if its response aligns with the mission or purpose you give it.”[11]

• Audience Engagement: Create interactive quizzes, polls, and Q&A sessions to foster a sense of community and gather valuable insights.
• Personalized Communication: Craft personalized messages and responses to inquiries, demonstrating your commitment to individual needs.
• Brainstorming and Idea Generation: Use ChatGPT as a sounding board for new marketing strategies, campaign themes, or content ideas.

• Market Research: Conduct in-depth research on industry trends, competitor analysis, and target audience preferences to inform your marketing strategy.
• Content Curation: Discover relevant and high-quality content to share with your audience, positioning yourself as a thought leader.
